Gammal tavla får nytt liv. / Old painting gets new life.

En gammal sliten tavla återfanns bredvid sopstationen utanför vårt hyreshus för några veckor sedan. Motivet hade blivit repat och stora vita bitar gapade på duken. Inte så fint kanske, och säkert varför någon hade ställt ner den för att slängas. Men den tog vi vara på.

Tanken har varit att låta de äldsta barnen (4 & 6 år) få göra en ny tavla av den. Den har ju fin ram och allt. De hade själva talat om det ett tag, till och med bestämt ett motiv som skulle finnas med. Så ikväll var de mer än taggade när jag berättade att "nu gör vi det här!". Så jag förberedde allt, ställde upp tavlan på ett bordsstaffli och radade upp färger, vatten och en lika mängd penslar. När man lär andra att måla är det bra att först visa vad olika storlekar på penslar kan användas till, demonstrera lite och sedan låta "eleverna" få testa friskt.

 Se till att tejpbiten täcker ramen närmast duken.

Innan jag lät dem härja fritt så hade jag tejpat runt om listen mot ramen, så att så lite färg som möjligt skulle skvätta iväg över ramen. Då ser det ut som om barnen har målat den klart och att vi sedan har ramat in bilden. Ha,ha. När man gör så är bästa alternativ frystejp men vi hade ingen så maskeringstejp fick duga. Den ska i så fall inte sättas fast så hårt, klistret är rätt så kraftigt och man vill ju inte få onödigt slitage.

Det var väldigt skoj att se fantasin flöda och att deras idéer tog form i färg. Det skulle var mörka moln, en ö av gräs med blommor på. Samtidigt var det eld i vatten och på ön. Plötsligt började det regna. Sedan kom åskan! Mycket dramatik. Färgen som är att rekommendera är akryl. Den torkar snabbt och kan tvättas bort med tvål och ljummet vatten. Som jag trodde blev inte bara duken målad. Också små händer och lite färg i ansiktet.

Man får ha lite koll så att de inte spårar ur, de kan måla på hur mycket som helst och av erfarenhet brukar det bli en stor grå-svart sörja av allt. Så jag "dirigerade" dem lagom tills jag kunde förklara att tavlan var klar. De godtog det som tur var. Det blev en så härlig spännvidd med den gamla bilden och det nya, fantasifulla. Jag vet inte om det går att placera den i en särskild konststil (kanske naivism?).

Det här måste ni testa ni som har barn. Det går ju att hitta billiga gamla tavlor på loppisar som kan användas till detta. Nu hade jag två små konstnärer som skulle samarbeta på en tavla. Om det är möjligt kunde det vara bra ifall de fick derasvarsin egen tavla att jobba med. Jag gav dem i uppgift att tänka igenom vilket motiv de ville ha innan vi började och efteråt försöka fundera på vad verket skulle kallas. Det får igång fantasin och kopplingen med vad man vill och hur den viljan tar sig för uttryck när måleriet är färdigt för kvällen. Har ni barn som gillar att jobba med att teckna eller använda färgkritor kan jag nästan garantera att de kommer att älska något sådant här. I bästa fall är det så kul att de tar upp måleri som hobby. I annat fall kan det vara något kul att göra som blir speciellt för just en särskild dag. Lycka till med era små konstnärer!

An old rugged painting was found by the house outside our block of rental apartments where we dispose our trash. The image had been scratched and big chunks of white could be seen. Not so pretty perhaps, and surely why someone had placed it down there to be thrown away. But that we made use for.

The thought was to let the older kids (4 & 6 years) create a new painting out of it. It had a nice frame and all. They have spoken amongst themselves for a while, even decided a motif that would be there. So tonight they were more psyched when I told them that "let's do this!". So I made all preparations, placed the painting on a table-easel and lined up the colours, water and an array of brushes. When you teach others to paint it's good to first demonstrate brush-sizes and the use of them, then let the "students" have their go.

 Regnet faller. / The rain falls.

Before I let them loose I hade used tape around the frame close to the batten, so that as little paint as possible should splash over the frame. Then it looks like the kids have painted it from start and that we then have framed the painting. Ha, ha. When you do this the best tape to be used is masking tape but we didn't have any so some gaffer tape had to do. It shouldn't be placed as tight, the sticky adhesive is quite strong and you don't want to have unnecessary wear on the painting.

It was very fun to see the imagination flow and that their ideas took shape in colour. It should be dark clouds, an island of grass and flowers. At the same time there was fire in the water and on the island. Suddenly it started to rain. Then thunder came! Lots of drama. The colour recommended is acrylics. It dries fast and can be washed away with soap and lukewarm water. As I thought not only the canvas got some colour. Also small hands and some colouring in the faces.

You will have to be in control so they won't stray totally, they can paint away as much as they can muster and from experience it ends up with a big grey-black mesh. So I "directed" them to a point where I could explain that the painting was ready. They accepted that, luckily. In the end it became a great span with the old picture and the new, imaginative. I'm not sure if it can be categorized into a certain art-style (perhaps naivism?).

This you need to try you with kids. You can find old paintings at car-boot sales or second hand shops for this purpose. Now I had two small artists who would work together on one painting. If possible it could be good to let them each have their own painting. I gave them the assignment to think ahead with the motif before we begun and afterwards try to think about a good name for the piece. Such things triggers the imagination and the connection to what you want and how that will takes its expression once you are done painting for the evening. Do you have kids that likes to draw or use crayons I can almost guarantee that they will LOVE a thing like this. In best case scenario they pick up painting as a hobby. Otherwise this might be a fun thing to do that becomes special for a special day. Good luck with your little artists!
