Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd

Flag at half-mast.

Such a book was surely in a lot of places today.

Tack, Ingvar.

Yesterday the founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, passed away at the age of 91, today the flags were at half-mast around the world among the about 400 stores the company has. At 12.00 there was also a moment of silence.

Jag skrev en liten text med. / I also wrote a small something.

I must say it is quite the accomplishment to create such a company. It has placed Sweden on the map and helped spreading both cultural and lingvistic knowledge about our country to the rest of the world. Furniture have names that in some way either mean something, actual surnames or names of places around the Nordic region. That in itself, is grand. In countries such as Israel, Malaysia, Australia, China and USA there are people who own a product named FÄRGRIK, STRÅLA, OUMBÄRLIG, KNARRA & STILLHET without any clue to what it actually means. I find that amusing.

Blåsigt idag. / Windy today.

IKEA will carry on business as usual, no great changes on the horizon there in the near future. We are many who own at least one product from IKEA, so the life work of Ingvar has meant something profound. Thanks, Ingvar.

CELL 9 - redo för 2018. / CELL 9 - ready for 2018.

"Under my skin", Touch the sky" och "Save me" är riktiga ångvältar.

If there is one band you should keep your eyes on in 2018 it is Stockholm-based CELL 9. During 2016 they released their debut album, "The Devil's Feast", which was reviewed among others by the prestigious Sweden Rock Magazine. There it recieved 8 out of 10! Other magazines and medias have also expressed positive reactions. And it is easy to understand why. In my opinion this is a fantastic debut by a new band. The album has a nice heaviness to it with some really biting melodies and powerful singing. As being a rocker at heart I contacted the band out of curiosity, specifically the guitarist Torbjörn Weinesjö, to ask a couple of questions. Read on to catch up on CELL 9.

________________________

CHRISTIAN: Cell 9 is a relatively newly formed band, but none in your trio are rookies when it comes to bands. In one way or another you have been involved in VENI DOMINE, NUBIAN ROSE, SAVIOUR MACHINE, to name a few. Tell us a little about your musical influences. For example, where does the name CELL 9 come from? Something to do with batteries?

CELL 9: Torbjörn and Thomas were co-founders of Veni Domine and was with the band up until it disbanded in 2014. We were also a part of N.R (Nubian Rose), participated on their second album. Torbjörn quit but Thomas is still a part of the band. With Saviour Machine Thomas played on their live DVD and album, which was recorded but never released.

Cell 9 simply comes from the fact that we rehearse in room 9 in a cellar which has bars in the windows, slight feeling of shaking bars within a cell.

CHRISTIAN: Things are going well for Cell 9. Your debut album has recieved high markings in several magazines (8/10 in Sweden Rock Magazine, for instance), you have already had a couple of successful gigs and you also played at the Rainbow Rock Festival last year. How come you have been so successful in such a short ammount of  time?

CELL 9: It's hard to give a definate answer, we've been in this business for a long time and thus not unknown to a few people, which of course helps when you as a new band need to fight for your space among so many other artists. Then it seems like the "tone" of the album appeals to many, it is quite heavy but melodic, rather compact and acccessable.

CHRISTIAN: Your sound is very heavy and varied. "Under my skin", "Touch the sky" and "Save me" are a couple of steamrollers for songs. How has your sound developed? Was it a concious choice to give Cell 9 such a heavy sound?

CELL 9: It was a concious choice once we realised what was our strength, we rehearsed quite a lot and found a form that suited us as a band, even if many songs existed already we sought to let the songs shape up by all of us involved in them. As a producer it was my aim to have the final result to sound like our band. It's fun to see the sound take shape during rehearsals to later prefect and enhance it later in the recording studio.

CHRISTIAN: I like the parts when one instrument alone gets a a lot of room. Is that something that will follow Cell 9 in the future and is that typical for the band?

CELL 9: I don't really know, personally I like to keep things open and alive, the band and recording sessions acts as a time capsule over what and how we were then and there. It goes a little against the time spirit and certainly not a good marketing tool, but I don't want for us to be a pre-thought product, rather I believe in the artistic aspect and think it will carry through over time.

CHRISTIAN: What brands do you use as far as equipment/gear? Is there something custom made included in the picture?

CELL 9: I am fortunate to be close friends with Jens Forsberg, who manages "Jazzy's Handmade Guitars". Just as the name implies, entirely handmade instruments in a small scale in northern Stockholm. We figure out different models and try out some builds, at the moment I have three Stratocaster models with different setups. Guitar number two goes by the name "Sister Mary", it was used during the tour we did with NARNIA in 2016.

CHRISTIAN: If you listen to Cell 9 just a little, you can't miss the deep themes you sing about. Questions about life, death, faith and the future get a lot of room in the lyrics. In what ways do you think the lyrics are relevant to your audience? What kind of response have you got concerning this?

CELL 9: I don't know if they are directly relevant to our audience, I don't write lyrics primarily that they are tagged towards anyone in particular, not most often anyway. Instead the lyrics are written from what lies on my heart, that feels relevant to "talk about". When that gets relevant to more people I guess the popularity about the band will increase too. Many rockers don't really care about lyrics generally but primarily dig the music. The response has been good, we live in an age when everyone has an opinion about everything, so that pretty much counts for a positive thing, right?

CHRISTIAN: What is the easiest way to come in contact with you in case you want to buy the album, merchendise (t-shirts etc.), or book the band for gigs?

CELL 9: You are more than welcome to contact us through our Facebook-page both for gigs and album. I-tunes are also available for digital requests.

And with that I thank Torbjörn and his Cell 9. The band feels like a breath of fresh air in the realm of hard music. You can find them on Spotify, for you who have yet not discovered them.

Att bli Vargen. / To become the Wolf.

Regissören för Pipedream Productions gav mig tipset att gå "all the way, May." med karaktären.

Men inget sådan 2018.

In the process of becoming Wolfie in SHREK the musical I didn't have much time for character-work. The part grew gradually, although much faster than usual. The director for Pipedream Productions gave me the tip to go "all the way, May" with this character. Fair enough. I thought for a while and imagined myself a combination of tenor Rickard Söderberg and the character Cameron Tucker from the "Modern Family" tv-series. It proved to be a better move than trying to find something useful from things like... I don't know, "Ru Paul's Drag Race", or something similar. At the same time Wolfie is a pretty innocent fairy tale creature. I imagined him as a wolf not really liking it in the pack but rather likes hanging out with other fairy tale creatures instead. There he can wear a dress how and when he wants to.

He is pretty "simple" as far as looks goes. This is what I did. Firstly I put on a layer of foundation cream as a base. It helps protecting the skin as well as getting face painting to attach in a smooth way. Win-win! Then I used disposable sponges to cover my face with a skin tone foundation, it can be found and bought everywhere where make-up is sold. It's to make the face more visible in the light of the spotlight, so you won't "shine" too much.

For me it's a challenge to get the Indian ink right around the eyes. But when you succeed it looks good on stage. It enhances the eyes and makes it so much easier for the audience to follow your emotions (which you are expressing with your eyes). I usually draw a short line just where the eye ends toward the temples. When it came to Wolfie I painted my eyebrows as well, enlongered them a bit. Then I pulled them slightly the wrong way, so they stood out a bit. It made for a bit scruffy look which I thought fitted nicely.

When all those things were in place I painted the nose, using regular black creme make-up from Grimas. I recommend you first start by encircling the area which will later be covered by paint. Then carefully fill in those areas until it's fully covered. When it comes to the nose I personally think it looks better if you also paint the alar wings of the nose too. I also fill in the upper half of the philtrum (the area between nose and mouth). It's a thing that has remained since the days of Santaworld, fits for all sorts of fairy tale creatures by large. I had a harder time getting the nail-polish and lipstick right. But I think I have got the hang of some kind of technique now.

When everything is in place it's important to use fixating powder, so the colours don't shine on stage. It sort of keeps all together. Then you are good to go! After shows I tend to use oil-free make-up wet wipes to get it all off. Since there is a thin layer of foundation cream underneath all that make-up it all comes off fast and painless. I remember during the early 2000's when I didn't use foundation cream. Red and irritated skin, among other things. But no such things in 2018. I have learned through the years, that's why it was pretty easy to turn into Wolfie. Even easier to revert back into Christian again, afterwards.

Den långa resan, ny teaterföreställning på gång. / The long journey, a new theatre play in the works.

Now the SHREK-musical is on hiatus up until March (as of tomorrow), which creates an overlap with the Cultural School and Öresundsteatern's joint project "The Long Journey". So I will change one stage for another. This is a project that was started during last Autumn and now will start to shape up for real.

This Tuesday (January 16th) we had a collate. Reading the script as it is and also got to introduce ourselves to each other. Now we will work together in a group of different ages, about 25-30 people in total, up until its premiere in May. The parts will be handed out this Sunday. The director might want to try out which people to cast in the different parts.

The plan was to visit the site for the play here at the Kavallerigatan (Cavalry Street) here in Landskrona. But January marks the month for changing codes for door-codes around the city, so we could not get in (they use tags/different door-codes to the main entrance). But it is decided that the site will be at the old drilling hall, just opposite of Landskrona Museum. There many soldiers have been drilled over the years, especially when present Museum grounds once were a military base for mounted forces.

I took the liberty to visit the site on a personal recognisance mission and could take some outside snapshots. It will be exciting to begin this project. It shares the harsh reality of immigrants and their perilous journey from their war-torn homelands - in the shape of a fantasy-story in a way, where the gods of old, clowns and other beings have a part to play. All is based on actual stories of people on the run. The 'based on a true story'-element feels a bit important. More info will follow...

Filmtips. Nytändning för musikalfilmen. / Movie-tip. Revival of the musical-motion picture.

English:

I might not be the only one who missed out of watching one of the most praised movies of 2016, "LA LA LAND". But three days ago I did. It has recieved a lot of hype. Not by all, there have been a few different opinions of both its content and criticism how certain groups of people are portrayed.

What I knew for a fact was that it would be a musical film. Which means having people bursting into singing whenever, for no apparent reason. Then you will have to remember singing is also a storyteller, much like the regular dialogue. Sometimes such things get interesting (2001 - MOULIN ROGUE) and sometimes just a pain (2012 - LES MISÉRABLES). With that in mind I put on the film on my big screen at home.

I was not fully prepared for this colourful explosion, beautiful musical themes and the emotional roller-coaster which framed the story. It was quite a while since a film touched my heart-strings this way. So much so that I had it in my mind days afterwards. I don't fancy jazz as a musical-style but here jazz itself makes up for the third lead cast "actor", if you will. Very cleverly incorporated. The main theme caught me good with its melancholy edge. This is a movie that will do its best to speak to your soul. Watch it!

The ogre is still there for one more week in Lund.

Premiären avklarad i fredags!

The premiere is done as of last Friday! It felt so good to meet the audience at last. Saturday and Sunday were also two really good days with a lot of visitors to the theatre. Tomorrow we are putting in another gear for the remaining 6 shows in Lund. Even if last weekend was good there is no rest for the weary. You still need to stay sharp at all times when it comes to shows. Always try to give 100 %.

Tomorrow and Thursday since a couple of schools are invited.

En pjäs utan ensemble är... / A play without a cast is...

I am surrounded by creativity to the max! During the process with the musical SHREK there is nothing short of making it big that counts. When I didn't have scenes on stages I had my place in the nearly empty seating areas in Lund City Theatre and watched my collegues in the ensemble. My goodness, how great everyone is. I found myself smiling and chuckling when I heard and saw all the crazy stuff that was going on during the show. My hope is that everyone coming to see this will be affected even more.

It's clear that director Matthias Dümmatzen has a vision for the show. During the week he's been doing adjustments to the scenes, all to get closer to that vision. This is always the case during the week up until the actual opening night, I would say, for all theatre companies. Many rehearsals for the same scene, a song that needs to be longer or something else. It takes time. Time that you just feel you sit out and wait can be frustrating. BUT, that is the way the cookie crumbles in the world of theatre. Things HAVE to take time. The reward comes later in the shape of a sharpened ensemble that is safe in what they are supposed to do. It runs throughout the entire spectre, actually. From the wardrobe department, dance-choreography, music and all the way up to the directing team. And a well worked and elaborated play or musical becomes tons better on the opening night. Which... is.. tomorrow! Yaikes!

I can feel a slight uncertainty regarding some positions still. It is tiny, but it's there. Most fairy tale creatures have been rehearsing since the turn of the month between September-October 2017, I showed up in the forest first on January fourth of this year. But I have learned a lot during this short period (also a big thanks to Santa, Malmö University and all theatre groups, for teaching me so well.). On the other hand I'm getting comfortable in my costume, this time it's a giant green dress dotted with white matron-dots. It turned out amazing and fun and helps me get into character as the Big Bad Wolf.

I can not point it out enough, how good the people in this ensemble is. A play without a cast would be rather bland. All these people who have spent time to bring life in all these characters do an excellent job. It needs to be seen. You can also do it by booking a ticket at Julius Biljettservice.  Perhaps I will see you in the swamp, either in Lund or Malmö?

Shrek i Lund. / Shrek in Lund.

I have to pinch myself sometimes. But this is actually for real, I am in a Broadway musical! For entering the ensemble pretty late in the process (January 4th), I am doing an ok job at that too. But I need to be much better, for the opening night is on January 12th! Choreography needs to be spot on, lyrics need to come naturally and so on. I have already learned my lines (they were not a plenty, namely, and no long Shakespeare monologues or thoughts about food - the Moliére-way, this time.). For learning lines one method one of the drama teachers (and actress) from the Cultural School here in Landskrona, Åsi, has talked a lot about. To read the lines while in motion. Seriously, it DOES something on a subconcious level for words. They etch more easily in the memory. I also made it a habit of learning the lines right before and after my own. It works like sort of a stimuli.

So, yesterday was pretty much "self studies" for the ensemble while technicians and art department moved in at the Lund City Theatre. A whole lot of things need to be rigged, sceneries and props need to be set up in their place and being tried out. So as of today, life will be about elbowing in the dressing rooms and being prepared to be called to the main stage to hone a scene or song. A schedule for the upcoming week came a day or so ago from the directing-team, which is great since it gives you some sense of what is going on. Now we will be able to rehearse in costume and the costume-department can soon take a breather after weeks of intense work.

If you want to see this, to say the least, sliced musical you can order your tickets from Julius Ticket Service. As of now there are actually tickets left for the opening night!

Universums härskare. / Masters of the universe.

As the product that you are growing up in the 80's it was unavoidable (or at least very difficult) not to be exposed for the big toy themes that entertained an entire generation. I was always more of a Star Wars nerd already then, but not far behind were things such as He-Man and the masters of the universe. If you watch the original Animation tv-series it appears to be a bit silly. As a theatre-person you can't overlook the cultural deed of the voice actor. They shape little persons perception of how a certain character sounds like. There were a couple of Swedish voice over versions were made, the one most "true" to the original is probably the one made by the company Mediahuset.

In a very amusing documentary series called "The toys that made us" the story behind the phenomenon He-Man and all its twists is told. Everything has its time, so also a toy-line. Prince Adam, his friends and enemies disappeared from the minds and popularity in the end of the 80's. It was hard to believe that there would be a hype around it ever again. Adult kids (those between 30-60 years old) who liked the theme are now meeting up in present day and has a faddiness about it. Conventions for retro/vintage are arranged here and there (even in the south of Sweden) where it is discussed, compared, admired and deals are made in the spirit of nostalgia.

But so during the 2000's a new attempt was made to get some life in this fantasy world, about the adventures on planet Eternia. In the same way Mattel went for a tv-series, toys and collectables. As a person bitten by the nostalgia from the childhood I knew I had to at least compare this series to the one that was made in the 80's. I had to say it was surprisingly good. Better script, animations and a range of new and exciting characters were introduced. One of the coolest (although little "screen time") among the heroes was the leader of the lion people, Chief Carnivus. For a long time I have been thinking of doing a painting of him. A sketch has already emerged. Probably I will make an acrylic painting of this or I will get my hands on pro-marker on a sturdy art-paper.

The 2002 series was translated and dubbed of the company Eurotroll. Voice actors were among others Per Sandborgh, Charlotte Ardai Jennefors (wife of Joakim Jennefors - also known as Bear, in Bear in the big blue house - the all time favourite children's show of my kids!) and Mattias Knave. It didn't turn out bad at all.

Dualiteten mellan ursprungsort och nutiden. / The duality between ancestral home and present day.

Huvudfokus för många. / The main focus for many.

Once upon a time.

A nostalgic look back... all the time.

Johan Olsson is an ex-Edsbyn son who now works within the justice-department in Stockholm. In the programme "Sunday with Stina Wollter" he shares some great thoughts about group-dynamics and what it can mean to be human. Interestingly enough, around 42:26 in to the show, he reflects upon his background growing up in a smaller place (only in Swedish).

Jaga, jaga, jaga. / Hunt, hunt, hunt.
