Deras nya skiva kan nog vara det allra bästa de någonsin har gjort. Helt ärligt. De har tagit pionjärandan från "Sahara" och "El Norra El Alila" (alltså gått lite tillbaka till sina dödsmetall-rötter) och injicerat det allra bästa från "Mabool", "OrWarrioR" och passionen från "All is one" och smitt fram en produkt så mångsidig, brutal, ärligt smäktande och passionerad som "Unsung...". Här finns verkligen allt (långa gitarrsolon, vackra körer, stämsång, stråkar etc). Inte nog med det, detta är också ett väldigt spännande konceptalbum. Bandet har släppt en liten video där sångaren Kobi Farhi berättar lite om tankarna bakom skivan (kolla längre ned).
Den utgår från filosofen Platon i det Antika Grekland, och hans 2500 år gamla skrift "Grottan". Den berör hans beklagan över att hans med-filosof Sokrates döms till döden, att världen mister en person som skulle kunna tillföra den bra saker. På grund av att människor inte klarade av deras utmaningar till omvärlden blev de obekväma och har genom historien oftast fått utså mycket marginaliserande eller i värsta fall bli bragd om livet.
Också med tanken att vi som mänsklighet "fördummas" genom att ha superkoll på kända personer på tv och förväntas att göra som vi blir tillsagda av våra ledare. Samtidigt har de flesta dålig koll på och i värsta fall noll vad som sker i omvärlden. Det handlar istället om tv-serier och det glada livet med det vackra folket som dansar ruset genom natten. Efter att man har sett videon nedan finns det en bättre förståelse för skivans koncept. Att vi alla lever livet fastkedjade i en grotta med blicken fäst mot grottväggen och de flesta är helt ok med det. Genom historien har ett par människor brutit kedjorna och lämnat skuggorna, blivit revolutionärer. Kobi listar människor som Platon, Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King och Yitzhak Rabin till exempel. Andra skivor har fokuserat mer på politik och religion tidvis. Här är det folket som är i fokus. Kobi refererar i videon nedan till hur det enda som behövs för ondskan att triumfera är att de goda människorna inte gör något.
Skivan då? Hur i hela världen låter skivan???! Den är helt E-P-I-S-K. Det finns inga andra ord som riktigt kan beskriva den. Vi har bara hamnat i februari men runt om i världen är det många som viskar att detta album är ÅRETS album. Vilka band som helst kommer att ha svårt att toppa "Unsung prophets and dead messiah's", det är ett som är säkert. Musiken flödar. Den flödar som vädrets makter; ibland sveper de akustiska inslagen över dig som en vårvind ("All knowing eye"), innan du vet ordet av befinner du dig i en argsint virvlande snöstorm (We do not resist) och andra gånger har du den pulserande sommarnattens behagliga passion i kroppen ("Chains fall to gravity"). Det händer mycket, allra störst behållning har du ifall du läser med i texterna. Det är längtande, det är argt, det är stolt och hela skivan andas så mycket vilja att det smittar av sig. Musikaliskt är det grymt tajt. Jag vet inte riktigt vart de har hittat trummisen Matan Shmuely, men han är helt galet bra - i samma klass som trumvirtuosen Ted Kirkpatrick från TOURNIQUET, fast faktiskt snäppet snabbare! Tillsammans med den trygga basisten Uri Zelcha utgör han en stark grund för musiken. Ett bands ljudbild blir alltid bättre med två gitarrister tycker jag. Tur nog har Orphaned Land två riktiga stjärnor på gitarr; Chen Balbus & Idan Amsalem, som får ljudbilden att lyfta. Sångaren Kobi Farhi gjuter liv i texterna och alternerar mellan att sjunga och morra fram texterna. Det breda registret han har i sin sång gör musiken väldigt intressant, tycker jag.
Nu har det inte gått så många veckor på det nya året. Det kommer att släppas många skivor. Men nog kan det här vara en god kandidat till årets skiva? Idén bakom känns relevant och musiken är fantastiskt bra balanserad. Jag säger detta som en helt vanlig man som inte lever på att recensera skivor. Jag gillar bara grejen med bandet och de teman om religion, mänsklighet, tolerans och andra ämnen de tar upp känns viktiga. Man behöver man inte vara troende inom någon religion (jag själv är kristen), för att uppskatta Orphaned Land. Avsätt en timme och tre minuter och låt dig tas med på en musikalisk resa utöver det vanliga, ge "Unsung prophets and dead messiah's" en chans!

Their new album might just be the best they have ever done. Quite honestly. The have taken the pioneer spirit from "Sahara" and "El Norra El Alila" (in other words gone back a bit to their death metal roots) and injected the very best from "Mabool", "OrWarrioR" and the passion fron "All is one" and forged a product so versitile , brutal, honestly languishing and passionated as "Unsung...". Here you get everything (long guitar solos, beautiful choir arrangements, concert song, strings etc.). As if that in itself wasn't enough, this is also a very exciting concept album. The band released a small video with the singer Kobi Farhi telling a little bit about the thoughts behind the album (watch the video above).
It starts with the philosopher Plato in Ancient Greece and his 2500 year old writing "The Cave". It deals with his complaints regarding his fellow philosopher Socrate being put to death, that the world looses a person who if he was left alive, could have contributed greatly to the world. Because the world couldn't handle the challenges given by that man it got so uncomfortable that such people got marginalised or in worst case scenario was put to death.
The album also deals with the fact that we as humanity is "dumbed down" since we have great knowledge about celebrities on the telly and are expected to do as we are told by our leaders. At the same time many have little or no knowledge about what goes on in the world. It is mostly about watching the latest tv-series and living the high life with the beautiful people dancing away in the night. After watching the video above you might get a greater understanding for the album's concept. That we are all in a way living our life in chains with our face against the cavern wall and most are ok with that. Through history there have been people who have broken their chains and left the shadows, becoming revolutionaries. Kobi listed people like Plato, Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Yitzhak Rabin, for example. Other albums have sometimes had the focus on things like politics and religions. Here the main focus is the people. Kobi refers in the video to the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for the good people to do nothing.
What about the album? What in the world does the album sound like???! It is E-P-I-C. There are really no other words to describe it. We are now only in February but all around the world there are many whispering that this album is the album of the YEAR. Any bands will have a hard time trying to top "Unsung prophets and dead messiah's", that is for sure. The music flows. It flows like the powers of the weather; sometimes the acuostic elements sweep over you like a Spring wind ("All knowing eye"), before you know it you find yourself inside an angry twirling blizzard ("We do not resist"), and other times you are in the pulsating passion of the Summer night ("Chains fall to gravity"). There is a lot of things going on here, you get the most out of it while reading along in the lyrics. It is yearning, ist's angry, it's proud and the entire is breathing so much will power it is actually contagious. Musically it's really tight. I don't know where they found their drummer Matan Shmuely, but he is insanely good - in the same class as drum-virtuoso Ted Kirkpatrick from TOURNIQUET, although a bit faster! Together with reliable bass player Uri Zelcha they offer a secure base for the band. A band's soundscape is always better with two guitarrists, in my view. Luckily, Orphaned Land has two really bright stars in that regard; Chen Balbus & Idan Amsalem, which makes their soundscape take flight. The singer Kobi Farhi brings life to the lyrics and alternates between singing and growling. His broad repertory in his singing makes the music very interesting, in my opinion.
Now there hasn't passed too many weeks of the new year. There will be many new album releases to come. But surely this will qualify as a good candidate to album of the year? The idea behind the album feels relevant and the music is greatly balanced. I'm saying this as an ordinary guy who don't make a living reviewing music. I just like the thing with this band and the themes about religion, humanity, tolerance and other subjects they bring up. And you don't have to follow any religion yourself to appreciate them (I'm a Christian myself), to appreciate Orphaned Land. Put aside an hour and three minutes and let yourself be transported on a musical journey out of the ordinary, give "Unsung prophets and dead messiah's" a chance!
