Kanske folksagor / Perhaps folk tales

För många år sen läste jag en hel del nordiska folksagor. Väldigt mustiga berättelser, många av dom följer en viss uppbyggnad och teman. Den lilla människan som lyckas, personer som lär sig en livsläxa och så vidare.

En speciell saga som jag minns är den norska Kvitebjørn kong Valemon, också känd som Østenfor sol og vestenfor måne. Den finns också med i samlingen Norske folkeeventyr. Den handlar om kung Valemon som efter att ha nekat giftemål med en ond häxa, förvandlas till en isbjörn och har den skepnaden om dagen, men är vanlig människa om natten. Ingen får se honom som han verkligen är om natten, om han lyckas med det under sju år så kommer förtrollningen att brytas. Men om han misslyckas får han snällt gifta sig med häxan.

I vevan involveras en prinsessa. Hon har drömmar om en guldkrans som hon inte kan leva utan. En dag finner hon en isbjörn med hennes drömmars guldkrans mellan tassarna. Han vill inte släppa den ifrån sig med mindre än att hon ska slå följe med honom - och bli hans brud. Sedan följer äventyret med att vinna kärleken och komma ut ur förtrollningen.

Det är premissen, lite skönheten och odjuret tema nästan. Men motivet går längre tillbaka än så. Från ungefär 100-talet e. Kr. nämns temat i historien om Amor & Psyke, en historia som cirkulerade i Antiken.

Vi får se om det vill till sig med en målning om detta i framtiden. Det vore skoj att göra några illustrationer till folksagor.

Many years ago I read quite a lot of Nordic Folk tales. Very vibrant stories, many of which follow a certain construction and theme. The little man who achieves, people who are taught life-lessons and so on.

One certain tale that I recall is Kvitebjørn kong Valemon (White-bear king Valemon), also known as Østenfor sol og vestenfor måne (East of sun and west of moon). It is collected in the collection Norske folkeeventyr (Norwegian folk tales). It's about the king Valemon that after rejecting a marriage proposal from an evil witch, is turned into a polar bear and carries that shape during daytime, while transforming into a human by night. No one is supposed to see him as he really is during the night, if he succeeds with that during seven years the spell will be broken. But if he fails he must kindly return back to the witch for marriage.

Along comes a princess. She has dreams of a golden chaplet that she decides she can't live without. One day she finds a polar bear with the chaplet from her dreams between its paws. He won't let it go with less than she will accompany him - and become his bride. Then an adventure ensues to win love and break free of the spell.

That is the premisse, sort of a beauty and the beast theme almost. But this theme stretches even further back than that story. From around 100 A.D. the theme is mentioned in the story of Amor & Psyche, a story that circulated during the Ancient times. 

We'll see if this sketch will become a painting in some form in the future. It would be fun to do some illustrations to some folk tales.
