Problemet med listmusik. / The problem with "billboard" music.

Av musiker finns det många variationer. Det är ju helt fantastiskt. Sedan finns det ju ett par stilar som man fastnar för och blir personliga favoriter. I mitt fall så blev det hårdrocksträsket. Jag simmar fortfarande där ibland men har också utvecklat tycke för andra stilar. Jag har alltid haft svårt för hip-hop och vanlig popmusik. Det är mer personlig smak än att musiken dessa artister representerar är "dålig".

Det jag har problem med, och alltid haft, är det som kallas listmusik. Tuggummipop med banala texter. Ofta finns det en rätt skum image kopplad till en viss artist med. När musik började spelas in på allvar under 1900-talets början så satte musikerna stolthet i att själva skapa sin musik och komma fram med texter som de tänkt ut i kreativa stunder. De blev väldigt personliga uttryck som satte sina spår i musikvärlden. Från vokalgrupper som hämtade sin inspiration från afroamerikanernas förflutna som slavar, via den begynnande jazzkulturen och förbi Beatles utmanande rockmusik, till elektroniskt experimenterande synth och upprorisk punk.

Ett stort störningsmoment är att dessa artister sällan skriver sitt materiel själva. De samarbetar med så kallade demonproducenter och låtskrivare som snickrar ihop något till en person eller grupp som kan sjunga. Om man då kollar i rock/metal, singer/songwriter eller i trubadursammanhang så har de oftast kvar den här stoltheten "vi gjorde den här sången själva". Och sådant har jag stor respekt för. Men så verkar inte fallet vara så mycket inom popvärlden. Det verkar vara lite annorlunda inom både rap. och hip-hop världen. En vän påpekade albumet "Untitled, unmastered", med Kendrick Lamar, som ett gott exempel på originalitet inom rapmusik. Svenska reggaestjärnan Syster Sol verkar vara ovanlig, då hon (till skillnad från andra "reggaesystrar") gör sin musik själv. Jag fann ett praktexempel på banalitet ställt mot genialitet vad gäller textförfattande häromdagen, som jag gärna ville dela.

Möt Niki Minaj och Phil Labonte. Det är ju upp till var och en vilken typ av musikalisk "mat" man vill äta. Antingen dåligt tillagad snabbmat som gör dig mätt för stunden och inte erbjuder tuggmotstånd. Eller en väl tillagad middag med lokala råvaror och en överraskande efterrätt som ingår i priset...

There are many different kinds of music performancers. That is fantastic. Then there are certain styles that stick with you and become personal favourites. In my case I ended up in the hard rock swamp. I still swim around there sometimes but I have also developed a liking towards other styles. I have always had a problem understanding hip-hop and regular pop-music. It is more a matter of personal taste than that the music that those artists represent is "bad".

What I do have a problem with and have always have, is what is labeled billboard music. Bubble-gum pop with cheesy lyrics. Often there is also a rather shady image connected to a certain artist too. When music began being recorded during the early 1900's the musiscians took pride in the fact that they themselves created their music and could pen down lyrics which were a product of their own creative moment. It created very personal impressions which echoed throughout the music world. From vocal groups that took inspiration from afroamericans past as slaves, through the up and coming jazz-culture and past the challenging rock music of Beatles, to electronic syntheziser experimenting and rebellious punk music.

To me, a very disturbing thing is that these artists rarely write their own music. The co-operate with so called demon-producers and songwriters that act as "carpenters" to create something for a person or a group that has the ability to sing. If you then check rock/metal or singer/songwriter artists, they have retained this pride; "we have made this song ourselves". And that to me is respect. But that doesn't seem to happen all that much in the pop- or hip-hop music world.  A friend pointed out the album "Untitled, unmastered", by Kendrick Lamar, as a good example of originality within rap-music. Swedish reggae-star Syster Sol (Sister Sun) seems to be unusual when she (in contrast to her "reggae-sisters"), writes her songs herself. I found a cookie-cutter example of that when insipid lyrics versus genius in terms of lyric-writing, that I would like to share.

Meet Niki Minaj and Phil Labonte. It is up to each and any of us what kind of musical "food" you want to eat. Either badly prepared fastfood that satisfies for the moment and doesn't offer you "al dente". Or a well prepared dinner with locally produced foods and a surprising dessert including in the price...
